Mystery -- Flatfoot Fox

Young gifted children who love mysteries will probably enjoy these books. How could they help but like the animal version of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson?

Summary: Flatfoot Fox is the (self-identified) "smartest detective in the world." He and his companion, Secretary Bird, solve a number of mysteries in this series. The two are the animal equivalent of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. As they solve mysteries in this series, they encounter all kinds of interesting characters like Scatterbrain Squirrel and Bashful Beaver. The books are full of humor and often contain tongue twisters, alliteration, and other tricks of language.

Perhaps it was the fun with language that made this series one of my son's favorites. He was far younger than the recommended age for these books when he read them, though. He was about 4 when he read through the series. He was an early reader, but even gifted kids who didn't start reading early will probably enjoy these books before they are 9. They might be reading at a much higher level by the time they are 9.
