Little House on the Prairie
These books, written by Laura Ingalls, chronical life on the Kansas frontier in the 1870s. The story begins when Laura is four years old. The year is 1871 and Laura lives with her mother, father, two sisters, and their dog in a little house at the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. The family moves from there to a new life in Kansas.
The books provide a detailed account of American frontier life, and although there isn't always much of a plot, the day-to-day details of the Ingalls family is fascinating. We see how a frontier family lived, killing and raising their food, churning butter, making bullets, harvesting maple syrup, and so on.
But the stories aren't just about "simple" home life. We also see encounters with wild animals, some of which are dangerous.
Anne of Green Gables
Matthew and Marrilla Cuthburt, an aging couple on Prince Edward Island, request a young boy from an orphanage to help them on their farm. However, the orphanage sends them 11-year-old Anne Shirley by mistake.
Anne, with her bright red hair and talkative nature, eventually captures the couple's hearts, and a profound effect not only on them, but on the entire small Canadian community of which Green Gables, the name of the Cuthbert's farm, is a part.
The story takes place in the 1930s, providing a glimpse of life in Canada during this era.
