All-Time Favorites - Lord of the Rings The Lord of the Rings books were not written for children, but many older gifted children love them. Because they are so popular, they are included here. Several of the books are about the Lord of the Rings books and movies, and most of those are directed at children aged 9-12.

Summary: The Lord of the Rings is a three-volume epic tale of good versus evil. The three volumes are Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. It is also a story of deep friendship, honor, and sacrifice. Frodo Baggins, a hobbit from the Shire, finds himself burdened with the responsibiity of carrying an evil ring to its destruction. Along with three of his friends from the Shire, Frodo sets off on his journey, meeting elves, rangers, and a number of other characters that fill the world of Middle Earth. J.R. Tolkien, the author, is credited with the creation of a new genre of literature with elements recongized in books like Harry Potter and in the many fantasy role-playing games for computers.
