Piñatas!
Few people today don't know what a piñata is. They come in all shapes and sizes and appear at more and more birthday parties. But did you know it likely originated in China? It arrived in Europe in the 14th century. Originally, it was a type of clay pot, which explains how it got its name. The Italian word for clay is "pignatta," meaning "fragile pot." It was brought to Mexico by Spanish missionaries in the early 16th century.
