Where did music come from? When did it begin? Scientists don't really know. But the first stringed instrument appeared in what is now Iraq about 5,000 years ago. Scientists also have evidence that musical instruments were made as far back as 36,000 years ago! They found Paleolithic bird bone pipes in what is now France and Germany.*
