Non-Fiction - Composition and Creative Writing

Some verbally gifted children love to write stories and express their ideas. Even if your child isn't obsessed with writing, it's a good activity to encourage. And it's never too early to encourage written expression! Most of these books are for older children, but you can find some for the younger ones.

Parenting Tip: If your gifted child likes to write, provide plenty of encouragement -- and notebooks. The notebooks don't have to be anything special. They can be plain spiral notebooks. Or they can be one of the many kinds of plain or themed journals available today. There is a theme for just about every interest.

Encourage your child to keep a journal. A journal can be written on any kind of paper, but sometimes it helps if a child has a special book that's meant for journal writing. Girls often get diaries to write in, but a journal is more than personal accounts of daily life.
