Parenting Tip: When my son was just a baby, I swore I'd never let him have a gaming system. I relented, though, when I saw how it would help him relate better to his classmates. With his Gameboy, he had something to share and in fact was soon sought out because he got to be an expert Pokemon player! That was 6 years ago and I have since discovered numerous other benefits of video game playing. Not only did my son find a community of like-minded souls, he also learned that he can't do everything perfectly the first time around; sometimes he actually had to put forth some effort and practice. That was a good lesson. If your gifted child is a perfectionist who wants to give up too easily on tasks that can't be done immeditately, you can use video and computer games to help him or her learn patience and perseverence.

Two caveats:
1) Although video game playing can have benefits, children don't need to play them 24 hours a day! Restrict their game playing as you see fit, making sure they have time to engage in other activities.
2) Monitor the games your children play. If you don't want your child playing games with violence, then keep those games out of your house. It's a good idea to read reviews of games before you buy them.
