Parenting Tip: Some of our gifted children aren't terribly interested in physical activity, no matter how good it is for them. Sometimes they'd rather sit and read a good book. In fact, you'll occasionally see a gifted child sitting alone, reading a book during recess while the other kids are playing! Quite often, too, our kids would rather sit in front of a computer playing games (particularly the educational ones that stimulate their brains!) than go outside and play. If you'd like to see your child get some physical activity, use his or her love of electronic gadgetry to stimulate physical activity. Get your child off the couch with a virtual snowboarding, football, or fishing game. They'll be playing a video game, but will be standing up and being more active than they might otherwise be. Another option is a game called DDR (Dance Dance Revolution). It's a game for Playstation or XBox. If you have one of these consoles, this game is a good bet to get your child active. Essentially, kids "dance" to music on a dance pad, matching their steps to arrows. The whole family will have fun with this game. In addition, kids love to have DDR parties! Even if you have a child who does get some activity, these toys can provide activity during the winter or on rainy summer days.
