FYI: Newborns can hear your voice, feel your touch, smell your scent, and taste anything you put in their mouths. Many people believe that they can improve their baby's intellectual development by playing classical music, particularly Mozart's music (Read about the Mozart Effect). However, it's the sense of sight which may more profoundly affect an infant's developing nervous system.
A newborn's vision is not the most developed sense at birth because the retina is not fully developed. The retina is the part of the eye that detects light, and while an adult's retina can distinguish between many shades and hues, an infant can recognize only sharp contrasts. That means that while parents can recognize and appreciate the charming pastels on many playthings and decorous objects meant for babies, the babies themselves can do neither! Pastels all blur together for them.
Sharply contrasting colors, however, can be easily seen by babies. What your baby will enjoy and appreciate are toys and decorations made in black, white, and red or in primary colors.
Because the infant's retina is not fully developed, sharper contrasts register more powerfully on it and so will send strong visual signals to the brain. Those stronger signals in turn lead to greater brain growth and faster visual development.
Parenting Tip:
Infants see objects most clearly when they are 8 to 12 inches away. Keep this in mind as you interact with your baby. Also, whenever possible, wear clothing with stripes of sharply constrasting colors. Other designs with sharp contrast would work too. My son used to love to stare at a light brown dress with dark blue flowers. He'd sit on my lap and stare and stare and stare at them!
