Parenting Tip: If your gifted child's
school
doesn't have a music program, look for community resource options. Most communities have numerous possibilities. The simplest and most obvious music resource is a music teacher. Even the smallest community should have someone who teaches piano, violin or some other instument, or who might be willing to provide lessons. If there is a music school in your area, see if it offers group lessons. Group lessons will allow your child to experience the need to work together to create music. It will also provide additional options for affiliation -- the chance to make friends with kids with similar interests.

Another option to explore is an area choir. If your gifted child like to sing and sings well, joining a choir would provide options to learn to sing a variety of music and meet other kids who also enjoy singing. Getting your child together with other kids outside of school is a good idea, particularly if he or she doesn't seem to make many friends at school. Whenever you can, find opportunities for your child to spend time with other gifted kids, especially those who share similar interests -- like music.
