Pretend Play Toys for Gifted Kids -- Tents

From Amazon.com
Editorial Review:
Made of black and gray nylon, the "Space Dome" is a somewhat intimidating object that all but screams, "No Adults Allowed--Especially Mothers." If there ever is to be a tent in space, this is it. This generously sized tent has a rip-resistant floor and a perfectly sized hole in which to insert a 5-foot-long pop-up tunnel (sold separately by Pacific Play). All accessories--storage bags, stakes, window ties, and Velcro fastener--are well made. This thing is not going to fall apart on you after one use. It'll last outdoor season after outdoor season, and even then it won't seem right to throw it away. Pacific Play Tents are more difficult and time-consuming to put up than other tents, but they prove to be much sturdier and weather resistant. --Claire Dederer

Parenting Tip: Kids love to create tents and other places to hide and play.  These makeshift forts and tents serve multipurposes.  They allow children to be creative and inventive as they create imaginary worlds to play in.  But they also serve as place for privacy and secrecy.  A child with several siblings, especially a child without a room or his or her own, can really benefit from such a secret place.  These tents and forts are also good places for children to go to calm down when they get angry.

Kids will use pillows, sheets, blankets, and anything else that can find to create these tents and forts.  You can help them out by getting them some ready made forts and tents like the ones shown here.  They are all sturdy and most of them are easy to set up and take down, which means it's easy to keep your house tidy!   You can also provide other materials for your gifted child to use to create tents and forts and other make believe building that will allow him or her to use his or her imagination.  You can find some great large (and mostly soft) building blocks for this purpose in the construction toy pages here at Gifts for Learning.
