Parenting Tip: Your child to begin learning about the earth from a very early start. Simple walks in the park or in the neighborhood can be an enjoyable learning experience. Collect rocks as you walk and compare and contrast them when you get home. You'll find some are really broken pieces of sidewalk or some other man-made construction. You can study the weather quite simply at first too. For instance, get a one-foot long glass or plastic tube (with a bottom) with a one-inch diameter. Make tic marks to mark off inches and place it in the yard somewhere in the open (but not where someone will trip on it!) Next time it rains, you'll be able to measure the rainfall. Once you start thinking about it, you'll come up with many ways to explore the various aspects of the earth. As your child gets older and you see where his or her greater interests lie, you can begin buying kits and other materials to help your child further explore. Be sure to provide books for your child! Here is a start: Some kids can't seem to get enough information about the earth. They enjoy learning about the movement of tectonic plates, earthquakes, and volcanoes. They love discovering that all the continents once were one big continent, Pangea. If you have a child like this, you want to provide toys and other materials that allow him or her to learn about the living planet. You can find books on volcanoes and earthquakes in the book section of Gifts for Learning. Some kids' interest in earth is concerned more with geography -- the countries of the world, their capitals, their topography, their people, their cultures. Globes and other geography materials are perfect for them. You can find geography books for your child here too. Then there are the kids that want to know all about the weather. They are fascinated by the formation of tornadoes and hurricanes, by the changing of the seasons and their effect on the weather. These kids love to learn all about it and benefit from weather science kits and toys as well as books about weather. Your child might also like to read about rocks and minerals or ecology Or one of these books might be just what your child is looking for!
