This encyclopedia-like United States of America Map puzzle provides loads of information for each of the 50 states. The Fun Facts Guide lists each state's capital, nickname, bird, motto, and flower, and includes such state trivia as the nickname of Wyoming ("The Equality State") and the motto of Oregon ("Alis Volat Propriis--She flies with Her Own Wings"). Each colorful wooden puzzle piece is decorated with symbols representative of its state. The massive California piece, which is broken into southern and northern regions, includes illustrations of exotic animals from the San Diego Zoo, a computer icon from Silicon Valley, and an image suggestive of a redwood forest. Such information helps puzzle builders equate national landmarks, industries, and well-known regions in the United States to specific states and cities. --Cate Bick

Parenting Tip:   Some gifted kids love puzzles and are quite good at them -- starting very young.  Don't be surprised if your gifted child works through the first level puzzles earlier than 12 months!  They do enjoy those first level puzzles, such as the peg puzzle shown at the left; they just tend to start at younger age and move through the levels more quickly than non-gifted children. This means you should buy puzzles sooner than you think and keep them handy.

If your child loves letters as much as mine did, you might even consider an alphabet poster for his or her room from Allposters.com:
