Parenting Tip: If your gifted child enjoys life sciences, you can have fun at his or her next birthday party.  Instead of serving regular ol' birthday party food, try altering the food a little.  Use food coloring to change the color of food to illustrate how our eyes send signals to the brain about the edibility of food.  For example, if you're going to serve hotdogs, soak them first for a couple of hours (in the fridge) in green water mixed with lots of green food coloring.  Watch the kids' faces when you serve green hotdogs!  You can do the same kind of thing with french fries (try blue or red) and milk (try blue). You can even dye spaghetti!  If you want to try blue hamburgers, you have to get ground turkey meat.  That takes the dye nicely and the kids really can't tell a big difference in flavor.  During the meal, you can discuss why we don't want to eat food that is the "wrong" color.  (Brain says it's bad, spoiled food!)  For a real treat, serve a nice brain, hand, or heart for dessert!  It's jello, of course!

FYI:
Did you know that "forensics" is really a legal term?  It refers to the use of science and technology to discover and prove facts in court.  So forensic chemistry, for example, is just the application of chemistry to the evidence in a court case as a way to interpret some of that evidence.  The goal of forensic science is to gather scientific evidence that will prove a crime has occurred as well as who committed it.
